Builders Blog Update - week 5

By Murray Kneale

laying concrete

What a difference a week of good weather makes!

Floor preparation has continued with the slab been hard filled, plumbing and drainage installed in the floor where required and polythene and mesh laid ready for Franklin District Council inspection.

Having passed the inspection from the Building Police (FDC) the floor is set to pour.

The weather this morning (Friday) is forecasted for odd showers but Kelly decided to bank on Pukekohe's normally tropical climate and pour it anyway.

With the floor poured, concrete cutters will come in over the weekend to cut in the expansion joints. Next week, the block layers will return to carry on with the block wall to the side of the garage.

These blocks will then be filled with concrete and that is all of the floor/foundation work completed.

While waiting for the carpenters to complete their current job we will have Roger Williamson Drainage come and destroy the site whilst laying all of the house drainage. Once the drains are inspected and back filled it will be a good tidy site and we are all set for the fun part with the framing to commence Monday 12 November.

It seems as though you are expecting the winner to come from Auckland. Why didn't you have a competition for a land and house package up to certain value that could be redeemed somewhere else around the country? Posted by Pete  08 November 2007

The main reason for building the house rather than offer a land and house package anywhere in NZ, was to put ourselves in the customers shoes and give us the opportunity to demonstrate the entire building process to those that are looking to build.  Each stage of the building process is filmed and screened on our series called "I Want a Home" which airs on the The Living Channel.  The programme also features useful information to help people through the challenges of home ownership - whether it's buying, selling, investing or building.  The progress of the house can also be followed by our weekly Builder's Blog on the site.  It's a fabulous prize and a valuable asset that the winner can either use as an investment property or sell it and pay off the mortgage.  Posted by the Iwantahome.co.nz Editor  12 November 2007 ...

Comming along nicely. On the home stretch but they say the inside, with all the finishing touches, takes the longest time. But its worth it to do it properly, then it only needs to be done once. Keep up the good work. ...
